A SNKRS win only becomes a pair once the payment goes through. Nike says it charges you only if you are selected, and that it needs up-to-date payment details to pre-authorize the purchase. What it does not publish is a step-by-step for a card that fails after a win. This post covers what Nike’s help pages say, what they leave out, and the checks to run before the next draw goes live.
What does Nike say about payment for a draw?
Not much, and all of it is about before the draw.
Nike’s draw help page says to have current payment information on file, because Nike uses it to pre-authorize your purchase. It says you are charged only if you are selected. After the countdown ends, Nike emails results to winners and to people who were not selected, within 24 hours.
What the page leaves out
It does not say what happens when the pre-authorization fails for someone who was selected. The draw rules do not say either. They do say that Nike reserves the right to cancel winning submissions, without listing reasons. We found no step in either page that lets you retry.
Why would a won draw fail at payment?
Nike does not say, so the best evidence is its general order help. That page lists the usual causes of an order that cannot complete:
- Incorrect or incomplete address or payment details.
- A shipping destination Nike does not deliver to, such as a PO box, a re-shipper or a freight forwarder.
- An item that sold out before checkout finished.
For a draw, the first two are the ones in your hands. A bank can also refuse a payment for its own reasons, and only the card issuer can say why.
What should you check first?
Work down this list, quickest first.
- The card. Number, expiry and security code in your Nike account, against the card in your hand.
- The billing address. It has to match what your bank holds, not where you want the shoes sent. Copy it from a card statement.
- The shipping address. A street address you can receive a parcel at. Not a PO box, a re-shipper or a freight forwarder.
- Your bank. If every detail is right, ask the issuer whether it declined the charge and whether an unfamiliar merchant tripped a rule.
- The order record and your email. Look for a confirmation or a cancellation notice before assuming anything either way.
Can you cancel or fix the order afterwards?
Only in narrow cases, and Nike’s pages here are about orders in general, not draws in particular. Its general order help says you can cancel within 30 minutes of placing an order, when the cancel button shows in your account. If the button is missing, the order has started processing, and Nike says even its representatives cannot cancel it.
If you do cancel in that window, Nike says you will not be charged. A temporary authorization hold can still show on your statement, and Nike says it drops off on its own within a few days.
What should you do before the next draw goes live?
Fix it in advance, because a two-minute draw cannot be repaired while it runs.
Open your Nike account and update the payment method and both addresses a day ahead, or a few hours at least. Settle the size you would keep at the same time. The guide to why SNKRS entries fail sorts these problems by stage. The pending order post covers what a waiting screen does and does not mean.
If you run entries through Laced, the same details matter there. Nike answers Address Invalid, Card Invalid and Card Expired when the draw goes live. The billing errors page explains what each one asks you to correct.
Questions people ask
Why did my SNKRS payment fail after I won?
Nike's help pages name incorrect or incomplete address and payment details as a reason an order cannot complete. Check the card, the billing address and the shipping address first. Nike does not say which one applies to a given order.
Does Nike charge my card before I am selected in a draw?
No. Nike says you are only charged if you are selected, and that it uses the payment details on file to pre-authorize the purchase. That is why the card, its expiry and the billing address have to be right before the draw.
Can Nike cancel a winning SNKRS order?
Yes. Nike's draw rules reserve the right to cancel winning submissions and do not list the reasons. Separately, Nike's general order help says you can cancel an order within 30 minutes when the cancel button shows in your account.
Where can I see what happened to my winning order?
Check your Nike orders and your email. Nike says it sends purchase information and order confirmations to winners within 24 hours of the countdown ending, so a missing confirmation after that is worth chasing.
Can I retry the payment if my SNKRS draw payment failed?
We found nothing in Nike's help pages that lets you retry a failed draw payment. Treat that draw as finished, fix the cause, and contact Nike support if an order shows as placed but the payment looks wrong.
